  • HDV plays in FCP, but not in Quicktime player.

Posted by Bob Roberts on September 11, 2006 at 8:15 pm

Running FCP v5.0.4 on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.4.7 and Quicktime 7.1.2…

I’m capturing from a Sony HDV camera and in Final Cut Pro my clips play perfectly fine. But when I try to play a clip in the Quicktime player I get a white screen with a “component missing” error, but the sound still works.

Typically I would just go download whatever codec is missing, but I’m obviously able to play HDV via Final Cut…

    Any thoughts?

    Try this:

    https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852

This may help your situation, if not… check with Apple for a solution.

The problem isn’t in the capture process or in recognizing the digitizing source, that works perfectly fine. The issue is when I try to play back a video clip within QT Player. It’s as though FCP has access to whatever component is able to read HDV, but QT Player doesn’t. Wierd.

If I’m not mistaken HDV is mpeg2, and your QT player is missing this component.
    Test this file in DVDSP.

    Cheers

You should be running fcp 5.1 universal on a macbook pro.
