Best Place To Buy a New Mac Quad?
I’m about to make the jump to a new Mac G5 Quad. Where would you suggest I buy a new system including a 30″ cinema display? Which video card would be sufficient for the 30″?
I also want to have a second bootable hard drive installed. Where should that come from? Lastly, the best place to buy 4 GB memory, and what type should I buy?

You should answer Jerry’s questions, they might change some of this, but here’s my first reaction:
* Computer: Apple.com -> STORE -> Red SAVE Tag in lower right (Refurbished machines, same warrenty as new ones)
* RAM: Crucial.com or Newegg.com (Crucial makes it easy to learn what type you need…once you know, price compare)
* Hard Drive: Any computer store that sells SATA drives. (Online or real wold.)
* Video Card: The one that comes with it will run 1 30″ monitor and 1 smaller monitor.
Are you using Motion or anything like it? Otherwise, what comes in the computer will do ok for Final Cut editing. -

we were just looking into a second machine, and the choice of quad vs intel, and believe it or not a new intel was cheaper than a rebuilt quad. I cannot say where the pricing was done as it was done by my boss, but rest assured this guy knows how to get a deal if its out there
i beleive the quad was 2600 and the intel was 2400

I’m located in South Florida. I’d like to have Apple care. The reason I’m not buying a Mac Intel is that I’m building a dual boot NLE system with FCP and Media 100 HDe. Media 100 is not supporting the Intel mac right now, but I will be using the AJA card that comes with the Media 100 HDe to work with bothe FCP and Media 100.

i would double check on that capability. I’m not sure that’s possible. While AJA is the OEM for M100 now, it doesn’t mean that it will automatically work with FCP. Media100s hardware/software combination is different than how FCP works. I guarantee you won’t get a kona 3 in FCP form factor with your media100.

I’d say AppleCare is a must for sure… there’s likely an Apple VAR near you. might look in your phonebook? (I couldn’t find a list on Apple’s site) You can buy applecare from any reseller or online too. I’d buy direct from Apple, or in one of the Apple stores or a VAR. (Value added reseller)…

Good point, might talk to AJA about the possibility, but say you bought a Kona 3… you’d be supplied with only the Kona 3 drivers and codecs and certainly not the ones that you’d need for the Media 100.

Of course I’ve double and triple checked. I spoke with AJA and Media 100. No Problem there. With that in mind, where would you suggest I purchase a Mac G5 Quad? I noticed that the Apple Store online has them as unavailable.
