If I have a DSR-11 plugged in to a firewire port, does it matter if I turn it off and on? I know this seems ridiculous, but I had a few kernel panics with the DSR-11 off and have not had one with the VTR on.

Also I have a need to monitor the sound using headphones. What’s the best way to do this with the DSR-11 used as a deck? My monitor does not have a headphone output plug either (JVC TM-150CG).

If I use Sony MDR-7506 headphones (which are known to produce a flat response), will the sound be accurate for editing?

DSR should be on before you launch FCP. I’ve never heard of a deck causing a kernel panic, but if you have it on, leave it on. Never a good idea to switch equipment on and off while FCP is running.

You’ll need to change your audio playback to internal. But if you’re using your deck to view your material on a TV monitor, you’ll need to play with the playback offset to get the audio to play in sync on your headphones with the external video.

Nope. Headphones are a terrible way to do an accurate sound mix in my book. You need to hear the audio playing out of high quality mixing speakers to get a true sense of how the sound will play. I use KRK Rokit 5’s and they are excellent speakers at a low cost. Mackie makes even better reference monitors.

    Thanks.

I don’t turn it on and off while FCP is running and it’s probably just a coincidence. I

To use headphones with the DSR-11, you can go to Radio Shack and get an adapter: a pair of RCA plugs to a stereo headphone jack (whatver size you have, 1/4″ or mini) and plug the RCAs into the audio outs on the deck. You will have no volume control, however. Hope that helps.

My DSR-11 is always attached via Firewire and is generally off. If I know I’ll be using it, I turn it on before starting FCP. I turn it off after I’m done with it and have quite FCP. I’ve never had a crash or kernel panic related to using it this way.

Thanks. I guess i could do the same thing out the monitor and may have volume control.

That’s what I would expect. Just trying to figure out where the problem came from. Were there any firmware updates for the dsr-11?

Decks generally don’t have firmware updates. None for this that I am aware of. Mine hasn’t caused me any trouble.

I don’t know what you mean by doing “the same thing out the monitor”, but you REALLY should monitor directly off the deck, if it’s loud enough for you.

The DSR-11 is connected to a JVC broadcast monitor that does have audio outputs but I think its mono — there’s an A and B audio input/output. In any case, I’ll go out the Sony.
