am running a lab with 32 students/ 16 stations…G5 dual with external 7200 drives. Apps on one internal drive, extra internal drive empty for storage. I’ve been told to use external drives for project files, and internal empty drive for scratch…..

    Ethernet-based server……

Network is set up like this:

The students username and password are on the server.

The students home folders are off the server.

The students security policies are on the server.

I’ve had lots of issues with Final cut having network problems….losing links, sequences, software corruption.
I’ve read some white paper info about final cut wanting to save files in very particular ways, and even basic user settings being reset when thwarted…..

Will this solve anything?….I know I need a dedicated server with Raid, but, no money right now…..

[stuntgirl] “I’ve been told to use external drives for project files”

To what purpose? In order to make them accessible from other stations? If you’re going to put the capture scratch on a local drive on the machine, you should put the project files there as well, and assign each student the same workstation each time they’re in – if that’s at all possible. The project files themselves are very small, so why split them from the scratch?

What you want to do may not work any other way for now, until you can get a FC RAID solution for video work only. You’ll also massively improve the performance of each system, as it won’t be looking on ethernet for other items.

well, I just got done with apple cert for fcp5, and the instructors said…..the software loses user settings when looking for files when networked.

And, they recommended the two seperate places for project/capture scratch media……the external project file being “safe” from network connection.

??????????????………it’s corruption from network server I’m concerned about…….I mean, if they are still “on” the network, even though they “save” to local internal HD, or even extneral HD…..the software is STILL looking to do what it does in terms of how/where it stores files, right?……
