  Exported clip looks different in FCP preview v QT player

  I’ve re-edited a collegues exported DV clip within FCP(5.0.4)

  I imported to a DV pal sequence, no rendering required, made the changes and exported both as QT movie using the Pal DV codec, and make movie using current settings. Both self contained.

  They both look nice and clean in the FCP player but very ragged when played by QT player on the same machine.

  What am I doing wrong here? And why is a mov file exported from FCP associated with FCP and not QT player – what’s the difference.

  Well, the answer is that you really should judge your quality on a bonafide video monitor and not a QT output, unless you know the issues. Any FCP Editor worth their salt should NOT cut w/o a video monitor. That being said, if you simply must judge your QT output w/o a monitor, then you’ll have to dig into your QT settings.

  It’s about enabling the High Quality flag which for DV is automatically disabled

  Thanks Kevin, yes I suppose I could have checked this on the the monitor (I have a IO connected but it wasn’t on at the time as this was a quick edit for known computer (QT playout)

  I’ll check out the HQ flag – is that a ‘per clip’ setting.
