turning speaker on during capture
we just installed FCP 5.1.1 in our lab and discovered the option to turn “speaker on” in audio advanced settings of capture settings has either been moved or removed. our jvc decks do not have earphone jacks and the audio during capture won’t come through the computer speaker unless this feature is turned on. anyone know where it went? we looked around the different screens but could not find it. we have students beginning to use these systems in three days so any help is greatly appreciated. jr

The audio is, by default, intentionally MUTED to the Mac’s speaker output during Log and Capture.
So you should normally monitor the audio directly from the camcorder or deck you are using to capture. (It is the preferred method.)
CAUTION:
Many people have reported that noise or “pops” appear in the captured clips if the Mac’s internal audio is left on WHILE capturing… so may want to choose “Off During Capture.”However, there is a way you can turn ON the Mac’s speaker if you really WANT to:

In FCP4x and earlier:Final Cut Pro (menu) > Audio/Video Settings… > Capture Presets (tab)
“Duplicate” the Capture Preset you are now using, when the window opens rename it (I added “MacAudioOn” to the file name).
Click open the “Advanced” button in the Audio section and turn speakers to “ON during Capture.”
The Mac speakers/audio-out will now play Audio during the preview in the Log and Capture window.

MAtte, I did as you said and it works, thanks much, our edit lab is 21 stations (not expanded) with towers, flat screen, and jvc deck without earphone jacks, students listen to their interviews and tapes through the capture and with speaker off cannot hear, but with it on they can. thanks again. jr

Matte is spot on as usual.
Make sure that you tell your students that monitoring external audio is the way to go in the real world. Therefore, they should be monitoring both audio and external video when they are in a studio realm and not in the classroom lab. Take a look at basic system setup and note that FCP should be set up with a video monitor and speakers connected to the DV Deck or Capture Card. It’s good to prepare the KIDS for the real world. 😉Next trick is to teach them LOG and capture.
