Dumb Question – Setting monitor aspect
What better time than the dead of summer to ask a really dumb question, to which I should already KNOW the answer?
I’m using Black Magic Extreme and somehow I switched the playback to the external monitor from 4×3 to 16×9 and now I can’t find anywhere I can go back to 4×3. The Audio/Video settings just lists all of the Black Magic options as well as Digital Cinema (and none). Or… maybe this isn’t even the place where monitor aspect is set.
So… how do I get the external monitor showing the 4×3 program in 4×3 instead of stretching it to fill 16×9?

FCP doesn’t have an external video option for anamorphic. It just outputs video at the aspect ratio that your sequence is in. So either:
1) Your sequence is not anamorphic. You would see this in your canvas window though. Assuming you missed this, open the sequence settings and check the anamorpic box.
2) Your MONITOR is in the wrong aspect ratio. This will either be changed on the menu (in most cases) or the button on the front panel labeled 16:9.
Or check 3) that in the Blackmagic setup you have not set the output to letterbox, or crop, or whatever the current set of options are (I use Kona).
Sorry if 1) and 2) are horribly obvious – but you DID say it was a stupid question 😉

Thanx, but nope. It may just be a square versus non-square pixel issue now that I look at it more carefully. Isn’t there a setting somewhere in FCP for setting this on the DISPLAY — it’s set properly to digitize and the output to QT and to tape come out just fine.

Confused Nick. FCP cannot stretch the picture on your monitor, and you cannot adjust the pixel aspect ratio on the video output. If it was wrong, it would display wrong on your canvas or quicktime output.
Have you checked the Blackmagic setup to see if you’ve got the output set up to letterbox or similar. Haven’t used one for a while, but I seem to remember a fairly comprehensive set of options, such as deinterlacing.
Can you clarify, is the picture on your monitor full-height anamorphic whilst your canvas is 4:3? If you, it’s NOT FCP, and can only be your monitor or SDI card.
