  • Uploading to a FTP site

I have a strange problem. I need to transfer a file to the FTP site of my client. When I drag the file to be transfered into the site of my client called “Vender material” I get the following message from Apple: “The item could not be moved because “Vender material” cannot be modified”. The same info pops up when I try to download files from his FTP site.
Now, the client has not blocked his site in any way. When I take the file to my PC, I can get it on his FTP no problem. (But since I do now everything on my Apple, it’s a real pain to get the MPG file onto my PC).
I just don’t understand why Apple is not allowing me to access a FTP site. I searched but couldn’t find a place which let’s me block access to other FTP sites.
    Any insides and suggestions?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Are you just using a browser or FTP program?

I use Fetch here and haven’t had any problems working with a client FTP site yet.

In windows browsers you can simply drag the file into the browser window and it will upload. This does not seem to work in OS X browsers including Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer. You have to get an FTP client. I use CyberDuck. It’s free. https://cyberduck.ch/

Like Walter, I have an ftp site and it works flawlessly with Fetch.
However, here’s a different solution that will easily get the material to and from you and your client.
    Try Pando, http://www.pando.com.
It’s free, it works for Mac and PC and you can easily send and receive up to 1 gigabyte of material at a time.
It’s simplicity itself to download the free software, but both you and your client would need to do so.
After that you just drag and drop a file onto the Pando window.
So while you are working out your ftp woes, you could be in business.
Try it out – what do you have to lose?

I like Transmit as well. Simple and elegant. Decent support, though I’ve rarely had a problem. It’s from panic.com.

If you’re not used to using FTP, just be aware of the differences betwen uploading binary (graphics) vs ASCII (text) files. For the most part, you can leave Fetch (as I recall) and Transmit on “automatic” and they’ll choose the mode based on the file extension of the file your sending.

Oh, and if you like using Dashboard Widgets, there is one for Transmit…

Thanks a lot. I read Walter’s response first and immediately bought the Fetch software because my client was waiting.
Yet. I will download the softwares recommended.

All the answers recommended outsite vendors. Does that mean Safari can’t be used for ftp up or downloads? If that is the case, it’s far behind Explorer.
    Thanks for your help, though.
