  • macbook pro output via dvi?

i’ve got a main system that i use at work with a decklink card that is great for playback output to a monitor. i’m wondering if i can use a standard hdtv that has a dvi input to get the same kind of playback from my macbook pro. i know there’s a setting for a digital cinema desktop preview in the playback output settings, i’m wondering if it would work if i just plugged into a regular consumer flat panel hdtv if it would work. would it still work if i used an hdmi to dvi converter? thanks for the input!

Are you talking about monitoring from a consumer HD display? the answer is yes if you can’t afford a real HD monitor, but the issue becomes the fact that consumer HDTVs don’t have true color… now I have done this type of thing, but its not ideal, and certainly not recommended for broadcast work… Personally I prefer to use the TV as a bigger monitor for playback in that type of setup, just don’t use it for color work…

yes, i was just talking about monitoring from a consumer hd television. it’s mostly so i can play through stuff and view it on a screen, rather than the tiny viewer on my laptop, not so much for color work. i just wasn’t sure if it would work if i just plugged it in to the macbook pro’s dvi port.
    thanks!

Difficult to know what to grade colour on these days with so many viewing options. I know the accepted truth is still a broadcast grade CRT but if your producing DVDs your viewers will have a variety of displays.

i know, i have a couple older projects that i’ve correceted that look amazing on any professional display, but look really horrible on many consumer televisions, especially the cheap ones. now i correct with both a professional monitor and a cheap television attached, it works out for the best. but this screen will be only for editing/playback, not color correction.

    John,

Have you checked out Matrox MXO?

    https://www.matrox.com/video/products/mxo/home.cfm

You can go right from the MacBook Pro to a component-in on an HD display via the DVI port.
