The power supply in New Zealand is dodgy at best as are the internet speeds and it looks like I paid the price with a power surge that blew my power supply and fried my mother board, now I know why it is called a “mother” board 🙂
My question to the panel, hi Walter, remember me, the kiwi curmudgeon 🙂
    my question is . . .
I wish to start over, I need a new set up to reflect my new situation out here in the antipodes, I shoot HD/DV/MiniDV/DVcam/Digital stills, Documentaries and Advertising Commercials, sometimes need to import film, I will be outputting to DVCam/DVD/VHS/etc. Mainly in PAL.
    Computer
    Deck
    HD’s
    Capture cards?
    Ram
    Etc, etc . . .
I will upgrade my FCPHD and possibly invest in Avid’s MediaComposer Software, not cheap here, nearly NZ$10 grand!
    I have the SonyHVR M10U
So, I am open to ideas please . . .

If you can wait until August 7th to see what Apple Announces at the WWDC, do so. At the very least, if you don’t want to be the first on your block with a new Intel desktop, the prices on the Quad will drop and I can tell you the Quad is a solid machine.

Capture Card – AJA Kona 3 with everything you’ve listed as your formats. Everything In, Everything out. If you have analog sources to get to the Kona 3, you may need some converters or an AJA Io LA to compliment it.

    Hi

In Addition to all the stuff walter mentioned, i would invest in some power regulation gear

an Uniteruptible Power Supply for your computer, monitors, and storage array. This will regulate the line voltage fluctuations, as well as give you time to save your work and shut down in case of a major power failure. For the rest of your gear ie tape machines mixers video monitor etc get a good regulator ,like a tripp lite, and run anything you dont want blown up off of it. The so called surge suppressor power strips you get at wal mart and the like are not reliable

we have a tripp lite 30 amp (110 volt 60 hz 4 outlet) and it has save our gear during more than one electrical storm!
    hope this helps

[Bob Flood] “In Addition to all the stuff walter mentioned, i would invest in some power regulation gear”

Excellent suggestion and I forgot all about that. In addition to UPS’ I also run Furman Power Conditioners in all our rooms, especially on the A/V equipment.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com has great prices on them and you really don’t need the ones with the lights.

many thanks Bob and Walter, I will keep my hand out of my pocket until 7th August.
Everything you suggested rings loud and clear.
The great thing about this site is how broad the scope, through my post I was re-connected to a Canadian Editor who worked for me in 1972, sheeesh!
Many thanks, I will let you know what i end up with. I already have most of the periphery stuff, now it’s mainly the computer and where to go with storage.

and so, as I start 2008, I wish you both well, I took your experience to heart and that is what I have invested in. On another forum I am looking for input on a good solid external HD, anything around 1.5/2.0TB, I edit offline primarily, not interested in being a facility, a simple 🙂 story teller about to start my own feature length Doc, many thanks and Happy New Year.
