  • Was a synch problem, now its probably a QT/Compressor issue

I posted an original question about why a self contained movie would lose synch when the timeline didn’t. It turns out that this was just one symptom of something much bigger going on:

The sound is only a small part of my problem now. Evidently an update of Quicktime has affected its relationship with Compressor. I am editing a movie in HDV native with some clips coming in from HDCAM. An off site associate sent me some clips shot on HDCAM that he sent to compressor for HDV encode (default settings). This process has worked like gangbusters up to this point. 25% of my movie has material brought in this way.

All my new imported scenes have serious motion problems that weren’t there on the previous transfers he did with an older QT version. He didn’t upgrade Compressor since his last successful transfer. Just Quick Time. All of my software versions are unchanged since receiving the original clips that worked. FCP5.0.4, QT 7.1pro

The sequence that has the new clips is having all sorts of problems. Occasional stuttering playback, intermitent audio drop outs, and horrible motion artifacts. There is even a scaling issue that is evidenced by a black border around the new scenes. All of my sequence and project settings are unchanged. Only the secctions of the sequence with the new clips are affected.

I tried re-encoding these clips to my version of compressor (2.0.1). No dice.

Anybody noticing different performance with the latest quicktime?

    To recap;
The process goes like this, HDCAM from deck to Cinewave, Dual G4, and drives. Cinewave files to Compressor w/default HDV settings. Copy the HDV file to disc. I import HDV files into my project, etc.

This is a real brain twister and I have less than 72 hours to figure it out.

    TIA,
    Jay

Cinewave drivers are your problem I’ll bet. They haven’t been updated in a very long time, and certainly never for Tiger. I’d be looking for another way to get the HDCAM in… maybe someone can capture it for you with an AJA or Decklink card?

The frustrating thing is that it worked before. Just 6 weeks ago. My associate is now trying to export the clips using quicktime conversion and its default HDV settings. His early test seems to work (on his system). He is on another island so I will not know for sure until tomorrow.

Thanks for weighing in, Jerry. I’ll post our results tomorrow.

    Jerry,
I wanted to report that after going back to QT 7.01, my associate was able to send the Cinewave HDCAM files through Quick Time Conversion to HDV. The resulting files play on my time line and can print to tape. One caveat is that I had to add the gamma filter and 3-way color corrector to get my blacks and highlites to match with the rest of the footage.
If anyone else gets stuck, this is one way out that worked for me.
    Aloha,

    Jay

Good to hear… it’s time to be saving your pennies for a new capture card… cinewave has gone the way of the do do bird I’m afraid.
