  • Can I capture 1080/23.98 DVCProHD with Kona 3?

Posted by Fred Grossberg on July 6, 2006 at 4:41 pm

    Learned Ones:

I have HDCam 1080/23.98 source tapes. Because I don’t yet have a fast RAID, I can’t finish in FCP, so I want to do an FCP offline and then do my online at Henninger. Thus I’d like to work with the identical tc as on the source tapes. I have a Kona 3 and a 1200 deck. What I thought I’d do is capture in 1080/23.98 DVCPro HD, do the offline, and then just work with the EDL at Henninger. I see that that I have a Kona 3 Sequence Preset of 1080psf 23.98 DVCPro HD. But I can’t find the same Capture Preset. All I can find is 1080psf 24 DVCPro HD. Is there some way to modify this Capture Preset so I can capture at 23.98? As you can no doubt tell, I’m a relative newbie, so please forgive me if I’m missing something obvious. Many thanks, Fred

yes there is a setting for 1080psf 23.98 DVCProHD for all of the Kona Boards.

Check the little box that says “Show All” in the Easy setup open dialog box.

Also, you are going to have trouble if your shoot tapes are HDCAM (which is a Sony format) and you have a 1200 deck (which is Panasonic). You will need to rent the proper Sony deck for capturing.

Not to mention that not all HDCAM decks play out the 23.98 material.

First thing I’d do is ask Henninger. If you’re planning on doing an online at a specific post house, it’s best to consult with that house about your workflow.

Good point. I’ll be playing the HDCam from a JH3 player that will play out 23.98.

But I still am perplexed. When I choose the Easy Setup for 1080/23.98 DVCPro HD, it gives me a Sequence Preset of 1080/23.98 DVCPro HD. This is good. But it gives me a Capture Preset of 1080i 23.98 DVCPro HD. Why can’t I capture at 1080p 23.98? I’d rather capture progressive than interlaced, or does it matter? This 1080i 23.98 preset bewilders me.
    Thanks – Fred

    Blame Sony
the HDCAM 1080 in-camera format is always a PSF or Progressive Segmented Frame — the images are captured progressively but they are always played back on all but the highest end gear as 48i.

you cannot currently record a true progressive image from HDCam on anything other than a Deck or DIsk array. The In-camera recording is always a segmented frame.
