HD and Final Cut Pro
In a few days I’m about to start a project using HD 50i footage captured from a HVR-Z1 Sony Recorder. I’m using Final Cut Pro 5.1 and have a powermac g5 2ghz. I’ve got 3.5gig of Ram. I’ll be editing about 20mins of hd and have about 200gig space. I’ve not done this before. Are there any traps I should look out for? Will it be possible with my computer and space? Will I need a more powerful card? I’d love to get some feedback as I’m going into this blind. Its not an urgent job so I have time on my side.

Ben,
You’ll be spending a good bit of time rendering, but other than that you’ll be fine. If you convert all your captured HDV material to DVCProHD before editing you might have a little easier time editing simply because HDV is so very processor intensive, while DVCProHD is not. If you doing mostly cuts only, don’t sweat it, but if you’re layering, doing split screens, etc., consider converting before you edit.

Its going to be simple editing. I just need good quality and high production values. Its more about lighting and camera work.thanks for your help.

To edit you don’t need a card, but to display HD (or HDV) on a broadcast monitor (or TV), either HD or SD, you will need a card. Check out the Decklink Extreme (SD) or the Extreme HD, $895 and $995 respectively. These are the least expensive cards for the job.
