I am looking for validated and efficient ways to take
media cut on FCP 5 and compress it on a PC. I prefer
to encode using a PC as Compressor, although easy to
navigate, runs like a sick dog on my PowerBook G4.

Currently, I am exporting my sequence from FCP using
    QT Export w/the following settings:

Frame Size 720×480 NTSC DV (3:2)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio NTSC-CCIR 601 / DV (720×480)
    Field Dominance: Lower
    29.97fps
    QT Video Settings/Compressor: DV/DVCPRO – NTSC
    (quality 100%)
    Audio 48k; 16bit; stereo mix

File size and playback on Mac seem good at this point.
I am then encoding using Autodesk Cleaner to make
.mov, .wmv, and elementary files. This is where the
breakdown occurs with these files. Autodesk Cleaner
has no trouble doing the same encodes to files that
originate on a PC when using AvidXpress.

So the question is this…am I dealing with some sort
of Mac/PC incompatibility? Or is it something else.

Anyone have a solution or thoughts.

    Thanks in advance.

Make sure you have a .mov extension at the end of the movie file. If you can play the file in QuickTime on your PC, Cleaner should be able to handle it.

Procoder accepts standard QT DV files right out of FCP, so its certainly not a MAC to PC issue. What version of QT are you running on your PC? If yo haven’t updated QT lately you might be getting incompatibility based on that alone. But, be certain that none of your apps on the PC rely on an older version of QT…

I did a whole bunch of compressions for the internet using Sorenson SQUEEZE on the PC at the end of last year. My QT files were 8bit uncompressed, but that shouldn’t make a difference. I had no problem working on the PC with the files I exported from FCP. In fact, I liked the outcome of the WMV files on the PC and Squeeze better than what I was getting from Flip4Mac.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. I’m still trying to get to the bottom of it. It’s not a file extension issue or a QT issue. Just may be one of “those” things. Have figured a work around for the time being.

    Export w/AvidXpress settings from FCP
    Import to AVID on PC
    Export uncompressed
    Encode
