  Conflict: FCP render scratch disk & where embedded motion render goes

  I have in FCP 5.1.1 a scratch disk selected other than the mac HD for increased render speed as advised in several manuals.

  HOWEVER, WHEN I RENDER AN EMBEDDED MOTION CLIP, it winds up on my Mac Hard Drive in a created folder labled “unknown” …within which is a folder wi my project title, within which is the render file.

  Also within the “unknown” folder is a folder labled “Constant Frames” with two items beginning with; CF-dvc appl-720×4801023303.

  The render itself worked fine. MY QUESTION IS:

  1. IS THIS RENDER LOCATION COMPROMISING RENDER SPEED BY GOING TO THE SAME HARD DRIVE AS THE APPLICATION AND APPLICATION FILES?

  2. IF SO, IS THERE ANY WAY TO GET FCP TO USE MY SCRATCH DISK FOR EMBEDDED MOTION RENDER FILES TO GET THE SPEED ADVANTAGE?

  When you initially select “Send To Motion” a dialogue box opens asking where to save your file — this is where you will direct your file to save to your media hard drive — scratch disk establishes only where captures go.

  And yes, all of your renders and media files should be directed at a dedicated media drive, not just to decrease rendering time, but so they playback properly without burdening your system drive, which has its hands full running the OS and all your apps.

  Thanks, David,

  Your response made sense and I tried it….i.e. saved the file on my separate media drive….and indeed that is where the project file wound up.

  However, when I subsqeuently rendered an embedded motionclip, I got the same location of render files as I described in my original post.

  Apparenly that “Send To Motion” dialogue box applies only to the Motion related project file only.

  So….still looking for how to get my embedded motion clip renders to go to my seperate media drive.

  BIG WOOPS!!!!!

  I found I needed to reset my render file button in System Settings to rechoose my media drive.

  and now the embedded motion clip is rendered on my media drive.

  Sorry for false alarm
