MacBook Pro Video/Monitor & Storage
I’m looking to set up the following configuration w/ my MacBook Pro, and I’m not quite sure how to do it. Any advice apprecaited.
I want to use both an external monitor for FCP timeline editing AND a simultaneous s-video monitor out for critical monitoring on my JVC broadcast color monitor.

2. Also, what are most MacBook Pro users using for external storage? The Firewire400 is too slow… I’d like to do an eSata expresscard (ala: https://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-2sm2-e/) and a G-Drive Q with an eSATA input (at https://g-technology.com/Products/G-DRIVEQ.cfm)… anyone using this configuration? Or what about the SeriTek/2EN2 external dual-bay hot-swap SATA enclosure? I’ve NEVER used a SATA enclosure and am blind here… where do you get the harddrives for the enclosure? what kind?

To get broadcast monitoring, you need something that Apple doesn’t provide (look at AJA or Decklink).
An external computer monitor is easy. Buy a 24″ Dell 2407 or an Apple 23″ or 30″, they all work.
Get the SATA external (Firmtek is good), Express 3/4. You can find good deals on SATA drives drives at http://www.newegg.com

Can’t you just connect a firewire cam or deck to the mac and then connect the broadcast monitor to the deck?

Try the Matrox MXO to get a broadcast output from the DVI out of your MBP
There is a Sata express card that runs at 3Gig for the MBP too.Peter

A cheap S-video monitoring solution, if you do not want to use a DV deck/camera, is the Datavideo DAC-200 for under $180 (www.datavideo.us). It is the same color as your powerbook pro, and only works if you are editing DV.
Canopus also makes the ADVC110, which has the advantage of not requiring powersupply (wallwart) if using 6 pin firewire cable. Again DV only.
These are universal and require no drivers as they function with the firewire standard and have nothing to do with the computer (hence DV/DVCAM only). They both give you the possibility of digitizing analogue (composite) video and unbalanced audio.
