    Hey all,

Quick question. I’m Color Correcting in HD, and adjusting luma levels so that they are broadcast safe using the 3 Way Color Corrector in FCP. When the clips are unrendered (unlimited RT playback), my external scopes read that the clips are legal, even when on a freeze frame (which final cut should do a final render on before displaying). However, when I render the clips with all the color correction filters, their luma levels are no longer legal on the scopes. Any ideas why? Oh yeah, and I’m trying to avoid using a Broadcast Safe clamp.

    Thanks in advance!

    Ben

So you’re saying the levels are jumping up? haven’t seen that here. I generally let my top levels top out about 96. Keep in mind the scopes in FCP are not completely accurate.

I’m now running Final Touch HD here for HD color correction which has accurate scopes and has an extremely clean broadcast safe filter.

Walter, did you turn the corner on FT HD? Last I heard you put it up on the auction block.

Yep, if you go back into that thread I noted that the engineering team worked with me for about two weeks to solve the issue and even improved the HSL controls in the Secondaries at the same time.

Still only running it on my Dual 2.0’s as I don’t want to purchase the top of the line nVidia card for the Quad at $2,000+ just to run FT. I’ll wait for the Intels to come out and put a top of the line card in one of those.

    Walter,

Yeah, the levels are jumping up after render. And I’m not really using the FCP scopes… well I am, but not to gague final levels – this jumping is happening on an external HD scope. It seems that the final luma levels are not being rendered in full when the FCP playhead is paused… I don’t know why this would happen but doing extensive color correction would prove (or is proving…) difficult if this is the case.

    Thanks again,

    Ben

Turn off all the overlays in the Canvas window, that will throw off your output when you’re parked on a still. Also, don’t be afraid of the Broadcast Safe filter. Correct as you would normally with the 3-way, then add the Broadcast Safe filter to stay on the safe side.

Like Walter, I’m transitioning to Final Touch, great program, but for simple stuff, FCPs filters work well.

    Cheers

Except in the case of red, and even some high whites. The Broadcast Safe filter does ugly things to red. When I have red in scenes being CC’d with the 3-Way, I just play it safe within in the 3-Way and avoid the broadcast safe filter altogether.

Have you checked your render settings? Perhaps they are on RGB not YUV.

Like Walter, I have not had a level jump using 3 way on HD either
