firewire conflictions
hello. i hope i can get some help on this one. i have a 15″ powerbook and it has one firewire port. i have an external hard drive and the dv camera i want to hook up. i hook up the external hd and put the dc camera, which is then S- cabled to my broad monitor. in fcp 5, the timeline doesn’t play on the broadcast monitor. the video will display only as a still. i have refreshed a/v devices and have allowed it to play all frames, but still no dice. when i take out the external hd and just hook up the camera, it’s cool. i assumed that both firewire devices are fighting for superiority. if this is true, will getting a firewire hub solve my problem? sorry for it being so long, i just wanted to give the details. thanks.

No, becaue even though you have a FW hub, your hard drive and camera are still going into the same single firewire BUS connection to your computer, so you’re not gaining anything by buying the hub. For optimum ransfer rates the hard drive and the camera need to be on a separate BUS. You need to get a FW card for your laptop that you can plug the hard drive into while using the stock FW port on the laptop for your camera connection.
In some instances the way you have it set up now will work and all frames of video will output properly to your TV or broadcast monitor…….if your computer and grahpics card are fast enough and you’re using a single FW800 BUS. But it’s not recommended.

I can’t advise you on a FW card because I don’t own a laptop and wouldn’t know what to recommend. Sorry.
