P2 footage with AJA Kona2
Posted by Luke David on May 22, 2006 at 9:34 pmI brought in a ton of footage from a drive that was shot on a Panansonic P2 camera (DVCPRO HD 720p60, 960X720 pixel aspect) We have an AJA Kona 2 card here on a Dual 2.7 PowerPC G5. The matching setting from the easy setup window is still giving me a red render bar in my new sequences with this gootage. What am I doing wrong that is not allowing me to view the footage in real time? Also, is it possible to drop into a standard def sequence and output without rendering. This is about 5 hours of footage that I just need to transfer. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks – Luke

May 22, 2006 at 9:40 pmChoose the AJA Kona 2 DVCPRO HD 720p60 Varicam easy setup. CREATE A NEW TIMELINE (it should say sequence 2 if you have a brand new project open), then put your footage in there.
If this doesn’t work, your footage is not 720p, but something else. If you footage is 24p, then you need to select the Kona 2 23.98 Varicam easy setup, create a new timeline, and drop your footage in that.
If you need and SD master, then you can simply edit in HD, the use the Kona 2 to play out a real time downconvert, or you can even monitor a real time downconvert. Use the Kona control panel to select your output and format of downconvert.

Jeremy, I don’t have this preset in the easy setup menu…could it be something else?

May 22, 2006 at 9:56 pmhave you installed the latest Kona 2 drivers? Double checking my presets it should read AJA Kona 2: 720p 59.94 DVCPROHD. If you don’t see it, select the “show all” checkbox in the top right hand corner of the easy setup window. Hit control-q to being up the easy setup window.

May 22, 2006 at 10:21 pmOK, I installed the updated drivers and got the preset you referred to, nice one, but still a red line. would this a kona setting that I have wrong?

May 22, 2006 at 10:24 pmJust to be sure. you select the preset, AND THEN YOU MAKE A NEW SEQUENCE???? Better yet. Choose that easy setup. Delete the sequence you have right now and make a new sequence. Drop your footage in and you should be good to go. Are you sure you have shot 720p60 and not 720p24 or DV50?

May 23, 2006 at 12:28 amIf the footage is shot on P2, it should be a standard codec in FCP.

May 23, 2006 at 1:29 amDon’t use the AJA codecs. Just choose DVCPRO HD 720p60 or 720p24…whatever format the footage was shot in.

May 23, 2006 at 1:37 amThat will work, but then he won’t see the preview out to his monitor (he has a Kona 2 installed), besides, AJA uses apple codecs, hence the DVCPRO HD in the easy setup title. ALso, he needs to monitor the real time down convert which can’t be done unless you have the Kona card. There’s a mismatch somewhere between his settings and captured material. My guess is that the footage is actually 720p24, in which case, Luke, you need to select the 720 23.98 DVCPRO HD AJA KONA 2 setup. If you shot 1080, then you need to choose one of the 1080 DVCPRO HD setups, depending on your frame rate (23.98 psf or 29.97). I do this on a daily basis and it works, he just needs to double check his settings.
