    Hi,

Can anyone give me any real-world indications of how fast they turn around the FCP cross-grades.

Say, if they got my DVD’s this week, how long till I’d get the replacements?

    Thanks,

    Wayne

It took a terribly long time for me. I sent them in before they started shipping them out (so, early March, I guess?) and I only got mine about 10 days ago. When did they start shipping them? I’m not positive but I think I was waiting 3 to 5 weeks after the first people got theirs…something like that.

Hopefully that was just because a lot of people sent in orders right up front and things have settled down now, but I couldn’t say, really.

On a similar topic… when you install 5.1, can you do this “on top of” the older FCS apps or do you have to “uninstall” (or manually trash) the older apps first?

    Sincerely,

I got mine in about a week (lucky, I guess) and I did not have to uninstall anything.

I assume you could drag the old FCP HD app out of the Apps folder, along with older copies of DVDSP, Motion etc and then install the 5.1 upgrade. This might enable you to run both the new and old versions. Has anyone done this? Boy, I sure would if they took my darn discs. Also, has anyone tried making a safety backup of their discs before sending them in using Carbon Copy Cloner etc. Seems only fair that we would have that option in case something went horribly wrong with the 5.1 upgrade.

With the Studio apps with so many components involved, I don’t like the idea of completely surrendering my old version, installing over it, essentially deleting it, and then hoping that everythingn turns out ok…not to mention that every project you open becomes a 5.1 project…no going back….

Anyone with real world experience here?

I got my discs in three weeks.

And, don’t sweat the install, it goes very smoothly and seems pretty bulletproof. I cloned my system drive just in case, but it proved unnecessary. There is a new update available now as well, to 5.1.1, that is also just fine without issues.

Took around 10 days. Apple sent it via media mail, which is not trackable! If one wanted it faster, you might want to call Apple direct or just go buy an upgrade package with 5.1

BTW, don’t send in your sound loops, Live Type Data disks. In a rush to send it in, I mis-read the instructions page and sent them all in. When my new cross grade came they did not send back the sound loops, Live Type Data dvd’s. They were eventually sent back in the mail 7 days later.

I installed my 5.1 “on top of” an existing install. No problems.

    Just wondering.
Is the disc trade-in something that could be done at an Apple Store or does it need to be done thru the mail. There is an Apple store about two hours from me and I was thinking of driving there this weekend to trade up. I too am a little concerned about being without the system disks just in case.
