No, the crossgrade can not be done at an Apple Store.

Concerned about losing your discs? Back them up! Use Disk Utility (in “/Applications/Utilities”) to make disc images from your install DVDs. Save those disc images on your hard drive until your 5.1 discs arrive.

    Sounds like a good plan.

10 days from shipping them to the Cross Grade address in IN.

As a precaution, I backed up my install disks. Took some time, but well worth the insurance.

    Hope that helps.

The only problem with backing up the disks is many of the install disks are dual layer. Both the Motion and DVDSP disks are over 6 GB. If you don’t have a dual layer burner, you’re sort of outta luck.

I made disk images of all mine and put them on a FW drive, but I don’t think they’ll work as install disks because I think the installer looks to the physical DVD drive. However, I can’t test that theory because I don’t want to reinstall software that’s working just fine right now.

If anyone else knows the answer for certain or is in the position to test, I think many people here would appreciate it.

Installing from disc images works, I’ve done it.

Mount all the disks on your computer, run the installer and it goes through all at once never asking for a disc change.

And, if you do want to back them up to disk, Toast Titanium 7 finally offers the option to spread across disks.

I used Toast to make images of each installer, then you go to Toast data tab and choose ‘Mac Only,’ then drag all those images into the tab and it will tell you how many disks it will take and burn away…

    Gotta love that!

A small app is burned onto each disk that you use to restore the data. Cool.

6 days here in the UK, disks sent to and shipped back from Ireland. I’d accidentally sent in the content disks too and I got those back a couple of days later.
