  Need to edit Panny HVX200 HD 720P footage on FCP now!

  Okay, I was hoping Apple would be releasing Final Cut Pro 5.5 at NAB with 720P HD and HDV compatibility, but not to be.

  So, can anyone answer this for me please?

  I’ve just bought a Panasonic HVX200 and a JVC GY-HD101E (that’s right, I’m in the UK).

  I intend shooting HVX200 footage in DVCProHD 720P and JVC GY-HD101E footage in HDV 720P. I want to edit both lots of footage in the same sequence in Final Cut Pro. From what I understand all I have to do is a transcode of the JVC footage in QuickTime Pro to turn it into the same codec/format as the DVCPro footage.

  But, FCP5 does not do 720P HD or HDV, so how can I edit footage from these two cameras and as I assume QuickTime Pro does not handle transcoding of 720P HDV footage from the JVC into the Panny codec, what do I do about this?

  I’ve heard that Lumiere is absolute rubbish (according to JVC expert in the UK). What are my options; if Lumiere is not rubbish as I’ve heard, will it solve my problem of two slightly different formats in the same sequence in FCP5?

  I hope this little composite of questions makes sense as I can’t wait until the Developers Conference in the Summer for Apple to (maybe) release a 720P HD compatible FCP5.5, Jerry, a hint perhaps if I’m wrong on the Apple front 😉 I mean, if I told you I am shooting this production over the next 7 weeks and needed to edit it 8 to 10 weeks from now, will I be safe in the knowledge that I will be able to buy FCP5.5 or 6 with 720P HD compatibility by then in the UK?

  If you already own FCP 5.x, I’d recommend that you peek into your manual. Otherwise, maybe a quick trip to the FCP page at apple.com would be enough?

  FCP has supported DVCPro HD 720p natively in software (as in ‘doesn’t need no special hardware’) since v 4.5. With proper hardware, you could have worked with that format since at least v3.x.

  I think you’ll find he means 720 25P, basically the world doesn’t exist outside of the USA for Apple, we UK users always get the short straw, higher prices last to be supported.

  I’m pretty sure you can do this with the Kona LH or LHe. Simply send a component feed from your HDV camera and capture to the DVCPro HD codec / frame rate of your choice.

  that’s what we do with 24, 30 and 60 HDV. Just capture it directly to the DVCPro HD codec via the Kona LH / LHe.
