Hi there, I’d like to darken the corners of my final movie a bit, creating a sort of “halo of darkness” and I’m not sure how to go about it so that it looks really nice…

I’ve tried importing a Photoshop file with a gradient alpha from the center to the four corners but I get banding in FCP.

    Any ideas/solutions?

    Thanks, Chemix

Effects > Video Filters > Matte > Mask Shape > Oval (make it the right size)

add the “Mask Feather” filter and adjust to taste.

    That’s a good one!

Now if you wanted to adjust it on a clip by clip basis depending on overall luma…? will you still use this method?

    Thanks a lot

If you create a new video track ABOVE your video, drop the “Slug” onto that track, then add your “matte” effect to the Slug (and “razor blade” it to the length of each clip below) you can adjust the opacity (therefor its “darkness”) of the upper track effect over each individual video clip.

I’ve found also adding the multiply composite mode to the slug with an oval applied, gives a nice subtle vingette look. on a shot by shot basis you can also use the soft edges filter under the matte category in the filters tab

Bet you didn’t think you’d still be getting thanks for that post 4 years later – but you have just given me the answer I’ve been looking for! Many thanks mate, you’ve given the advice that keeps on giving! Haha!
