Just shot some night stuff which im going to speed up. In the shot, there is plenty of fast traffic which i want to apply a filter to.

I want the tail lights to streak as it passes through the shot. ( so it looks like a slow shutter photo if taken with a 35mm SLR). I think one of Madonna’s videos had this effect.

Unfortunatly i cant seem to find the right filter within final cut 5.

    Am i blind?

Hope someone can help as it feels like ive tried everything!

    Cheers

That is an effect one gets when they shoot film, as it can have long shutter speeds that leave the film exposed to light for longer thus causing the streaking. This will be very difficult to pull off in FCP. I have yet to see a filter or plugin that causes this.

But I have been known to be wrong.

You might want to try playing with the motion blur under the motion tab, but you should expect loooong render times. And to re-render if you make changes to the clip.

If you have, or know someone who has some of the saphire or tinderbox plugins for After Effects or FCP, they each have a plugin that produces trails, like video feedback. I’m sure there are others, but I just don’t know off the top of my head (maybe boris).

If all else fails, reshoot and close your iris and slow down your shutter. If you can’t recreate the scene, worst case scenario would be to play back the video on your TV while shooting your tv with your camcorder while leaving the shutter open longer than normal. Be sure you’re in the dark to avoid any light spill. I’ve never done this, but I bet the long shutter would look pretty cool while doing this.

    Have fun,
    Gary
