  Aurora Pipeline Pro vs. Everyone Else

  Marco Solorio’s reviews at OneRiver Media suggest that Aurora developed the best 10 bit uncompressed codec of any out there. I know those reviews were undertaken some time ago and since then only Aja and Blackmagic seem to be keeping pace with the changes in the Mac, but I wanted to hear from someone who has had experience with the Aurora Pipeline Pro and experience with the competition: Does the Aurora provide a noticeably higher quality picture than the competition? I know this is subjective – but that’s what opinions are all about and I’d really appreciate hearing them. In researching these boards I hear a lot of folk singing the praises of the Aurora, but I’ve not read any specific comparisons from someone who has had experience with the different cards.

  I have experience with the Decklink cards and the Aurora. It takes a keen eye and a good monitor, but I did notice that the colors and compression were better with the Aurora card. Decklink and Aja just have better marketting machines. Aurora is a small company…and really I wouldn’t have considered the card, but I won one thru the COW during their huge anniversary sweepstakes. I have used it once, with great results.

  Thanks for that Shane. Hearing a first hand report of the capture quality is very useful. I spoke to the Aurora people and they said they’re going to be updating their cards to go PCIe but that they wouldn’t be able to do so for a while, which is a little disappointing.

  The Pipe Studio is a great value, has excellent connections and an easy to configure control panel. Works flawlessly in a FCP suite and will provide every possible Standard Def offline and online workflow you need.

  I also use the Aurora Pipe Studio and it works great.
  I use it with inputs from DigiBeta SDI, DVCPRO SDI,
  BetaSP component. Makes nice pictures.
  Runs well with FCP. Has all outputs running simultaneously
  which is nice for monitoring.
