    Hi

I am working on a series which will be sourcing footage from DVD (Film EPKs), for final output to HD.
Ambitious I know, but can anyone recommend the best way to conver the DVDs.
We are using Final Cut Pro with a Blackmagic Multibridge, so we have the option to capture from the component out of a DVD player as well as the possibility of using a software ripper.

The main thing is to get the best possible conversion from DVD with the least possible intermediade stes/ up-down conversions.
We can work in SD within FCP and convert to HD internally if we can’t convert directly to HD.

I am open to both expensive hi end options and cheaper options, whichever has the most favourable overall merit.

    Many thanks for any thoughts

    Very frequently asked question.

    Here are 3 popular rippers.

DVD is MUCH more compressed than even DV.

I really like MPEG Streamclip. You can convert right from the VOB file on the DVD to many different formats. Plus it’s freeware.

Here’s a link to that and many other great apps.

Google an app called Handbrake. In my opinion the best of the free apps and it creates as good a QT file as can be expected.

You are needing to use a SD DVD in an HD production? Forget all the software converters. They convert to an SD format that, when you blow it up to HD, will look horrible. You will be taking highly compressed material, converting it to a compressed SD format, then upconverting it to HD.

No, the best result you will get will be component out of the DVD player into your system via a capture card.

    Many thanks Shane.

This is what I was suspecting. There are just a few too many formats floating about these days!
