  • HDV FCP Timeline to iPod?…

Just completed an HDV video (I shot it in 1080i) in FCP and looking to export the timeline to iPod format. Typically the QuickTime export for iPod works well, although it is scaling the video to 4:3 320×240 instead of what it should be doing, which is scaling it to something like 320×180. Typically I export to H.264 .m4v (instead of MPEG-4) but I can’t seem to use the iPod preset and have it keep the aspect ratio. Any ideas? Is anyone exporting to the video iPod from a 1080i timeline and keeping the aspect ratio?

You probably need to export 4×3 with a letterbox as I don’t think the iPod will support other aspect ratios (unless you cheat it like I think you will have to). You might try exporting through QT conversion and using the 16×9 setting as I think this throws a letterbox on it as well as giving you the option of codec you want to use. I’m sure there are several ways to do this, Compressor, inside FCP, Cleaner, etc.. This is just the first idea off the top of my head.

    Good Luck

Oddly if I capture in iMovie with 1080i and export to iPod it works perfectly (it scales it to 320×180) but FCP exports to iPod and does 320×240. iPod export in FCP is not keeping the aspect ratio.
