DVC PRO HD to DVD what is the best way? Please Help
Posted by Vladislav on March 30, 2006 at 9:24 pmWe are just finishing editing our HD documentary. Project was edited in FCP 5 in DVCPRO HD 1080i codec.
We’ll need to make a DVD of it. I know there is no HD DVD yet, so will have to re-release it when HD DVDs come out. Meanwhile, what is the best way to get it out of FCP, onto DVD? Export from FCP as a reference file? Then Compressor? What settings? Or maybe Bitvice? Any other suggestions? I got audio 5.1 figured out, now I just need help with video part. Please help,
Thanks

March 30, 2006 at 9:38 pmRight in Final Cut’s menus go to EXPORT>COMPRESSOR. Then drag one of compressor’s preset compressions onto it. (You can compress the audio here at the same time if you like.) Depending on the length of your project you may want to try it once, see what file size you get, and then duplicate the preset you used and slightly alter it to give you the best possible setting that will still fit on the disc.
You can also export a reference file and then drag that into Compressor, but I usually just go the direct method.

March 30, 2006 at 10:24 pmMy concern is scaling, how accurate will compressor convert from 1280 by 1080 to 720 486.
Any other issues I should be aware of?thanks

March 30, 2006 at 10:30 pmI don’t work with HD footage so I’ve never tried it myself, but it is my understanding that it is made to scale HD to DVD-specs…it’s something they plan on people doing.
I would suggest taking about 2 minutes of footage, placing it in a sequence and making a DVD out of it. Go all the way through with the creation of a disc and actually watch it on a stand-alone player hooked up to a TV.
That’s really the only way to be totally sure of what you’re getting. Best to try it now with a sample before you put too much work into it.
The only other thing I would watch out for is the settings in DVD Studio Pro. Make certain that the video track you put the video on is tagged as an anamorphic letterboxed track. It’s up to DVD SP to mark the DVD in such a way that the player stretches or squeezes it correctly.

March 30, 2006 at 11:50 pmJust bought Bitvice from http://www.innobits.se today after demo’ing this exact workflow.
Thanks Walter for your advices in other posts.
Looks kinda “basic” compared to the compressor interface, but the results are screaming.

You’re welcome. It’s a much slower render than Compressor but it is an amazing app.

yep.
Working on some early to mid 60’s TV shows shot an film (in gloriously B&W), dubbed to digi and grainy and jumpy as they come. Takes some time, but it does amazing work.
Still have to do the audio manually tho’.
Thanks again.

you could do the audio in Compressor if you wanted to. so long as the in’s and out’s are the same, compressor does a great job with audio.

March 31, 2006 at 8:27 pmSean, so You’ve done Bitvice from FCP HD (1280/1080) to DVD and had great results?
what settings would you use for 52 min documentary? Would you use VBR or CBR?
Any other suggestions?Thanks you all
