Output 16 by 9 sequence to QT for transfer to Digibeta
Posted by Harry K. on March 29, 2006 at 11:47 amCaptured anamorphic and cut in a 16 by 9 sequence. My monitor allows viewing in 16 by 9. Exporting as QT for transfer to DigiBeta. Dumb question. Do I have to first put it into a 4 by 3 timeline or can I leave it in 16 by 9 timeline for a Letterboxed DigiBeta master that a regular monitor can play.

No such thing as a dumb question, only dumb answers. You Make a 4×3 sequence and put your 16×9 into it, it will automatically letterbox. BUT, you can crop off the sides in the motion tab if you’d like, if it was shot in such a way to allow for cropping.
Have a wonderful day.

March 29, 2006 at 2:23 pmIt was shot in anamorphic so there would be no need for cropping. So to confirm- material shot in anamorphic, captured anamorphic, cut on a 16 by 9 timeline has to be dumped to a 4 by 3 timeline before making QT in order to transfer to Digibeta so it will look right on all monitors(not just on a monitor with a 16 by 9 setting). Thanks

March 29, 2006 at 3:55 pmIf you shot anamorphic why not at least consider outputting anamorphic D-Beta Master. At least you have a future proof master for down the road. From that master you can dub to deliver letterbox 4:3 tapes for viewing or broadcast or whatever.
I’ve always done that otherwise you don’t have a suitable master to bump up to HD in the future.

If you shot anamorphic and you want 4×3 with no letterboxing, of course you’ll have to crop it, or it will look squished. You should read this:

March 29, 2006 at 8:26 pmSorry to intrude…I shot on an XL2 in 16×9, 30P. I have edited on a 16:9 secquence in FCP. I am hopefully going to put it on a DVD using DVD Studio Pro. Is it better to export on the 16:9 sequence and then let DVDSP letterbox or letterbox it in a 4×3 sequence and then export?
Also, should I be exporting wiith an editing Timebase of 29.97 or 30?
Also also, should the timecode rate be “Same as editing Timebase,” 30 Drop Frame, or 30 Non-Drop Frame?
Thank you so much! I am trying to submit to a festival in 2 days so help would be greatly appreciated asap.
