QT movies from Firestore to FCP: format issue
When exporting a FCP project, the choice is given to “make movie self contained” or not. I understand this difference completely. I do a weekly television show and usually just export this, allowing FCP to reference the original files, and place the movie in DVDSP for final rendering and burning to DVD.
Recently we have started bringing in QT movie files from the Firestore in 2GB increments (the default for the Firestore) and creating the show rather than re-capturing the event from tape. The FCP project is going VERY well.
However, when we place the Firestore-created QT movies, and while they edit without rendering (DV NTSC QT files at 48khz), the problem comes upon export. FCP will no longer let us export without making the movie self contained. You can check or uncheck the box, but it still creates the full QT file and will no longer reference the original QT movies.
We have gone step-by-step through the project settings and the Firestore settings to make sure they are identical. We have tried the “join through edit” in FCP, but it will not let us do that to create one big QT movie. What we cannot understand is why the FCP-captured QT files will work fine in the timeline and let us export without making the movie self-contained, but the Firestore QT files will not.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Our desire is to simply reference the original movies from the Firestore and let DVDSP do the work

Since the Firestore is not simply a HARD DRIVE (but it is a stand-alone device that CONTAINS a Hard Drive) I assume FCP will not “treat it the same way” it does captured files coming directly from a HD.
Don’t KNOW, but this would be a principle difference.

Noted, one element I failed to include is that we copy the files to the current project folder on the internal drive of the G5. So the QT files are resident on our machine.

Then there should be NO reason for this to happen.
I suggest you “TRASH the FCP preferences” and try it after that.

Perhaps it’s an issue with file type / creator id.
You could get a program like FileType from versiontracker.com and see what the file type and creator id is on these firestore files, and perhaps try changing them on a copy of the file to those of Final Cut Pro created files.

For what it’s worth, I use a Firestore FS-3 for capturing from my camera in the field. I then copy the files from the Firestore drive to my RAID. It sounds like this is the same way that you are doing it. I’ve never had any problem exporting QT movies using the copied files, either as a self-contained movie or a reference movie. As long as the files are on-line, it sould work. Just make sure that you are not actually referencing the files off of the Firestore’s drive by mistake. It doesn’t sound like this is the case, but it bears mentioning. I’ve been using the Firestore for over two years now, and it just works. Everytime. It’s a great time saver. I’ll be looking at the FS-100 at the NAB convention is a few weeks. Hopefully Focus Enhancements will be showing it. Hopefuly it will work as flawlesly with the Panny HVX200 as the FS-3 works with my currect camera. 🙂

I agree with Tom… If you still have your Firestore hooked up to your Mac while you are editing, even though you copied the files to your RAID drives, FCP is probably still referencing the files on the Firestore. Try removing the Firestore and relinking your files to the RAID drives. That will solve your problem.
I had this to happen to me early on with FCP and firewire drives copied to a RAID drive. I forgot to remove the firewire drives and I got a similar error.
