We have both FCP 5 and Avid XPress Pro on our G5. We are shooting a film with sound recorded separately. The editor prefers cutting on FCP, but the sound engineer finds Avid XPress a much better solution since FCP can’t read the TC on the audio files. He finds the XML solutions used by FCP such as BWF2XML cumbersome.

I would much appreciate your opinions on the subject; (yes I know, this is a FCP forum…)

There are many ways to get sound files into FCP with timecode.
Why does your sound guy have any input into what your editor is doing or using?

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Well, we want to tread carefully since this is a film project involving 24 fps to 25 fps (we’re PAL) back and forth.

Of these many ways, what would you recommend? I’m only aware of BWF2XML, XML Pro and Sebsky Tools.

What format is the sound being recorded on. If they are using a Zaxcom Deva or similar with polyphonic BWF files BWF2XML works excellent to convert to multitrack Quictime files with all the meta data attatched. I’m cutting a film now that is using that format and the sound is great in FCP. Andreas Kiel at Spherico has excellent tech support for BWF2XML (not that you need much). I’m using the original files and will export an omf file for the sound guy. Our tests have been bang on accurate and have been in synch. No ned to reconform the audio.

The BWF conversion works perfectly and
a friend of mine is just doing a film job
in italy using this workflow with FCP …
