  • HELP offline h.264 encoded clips in FCP 5

    Hello…

I am having serious issues with a current project. I have more than 50 hours of footage digitized using a KONA 2 card at offline resolution, which were compressed using h.264 at about 1.4 MB per second. They all digizited fine, and I can play them and edit with them.. however when I try to shuttle through the clips (which are entire rips of tape, aprox 20-30 minutes each) my machine gets real buggy and intermitantly crashes. Especially when trying to shuttle in reverse. Does anyone have any information, suggestions, help..

    Thank you…

H.264 uses interframe compression, just like DVD video. What this means is that just playing it requires a fair amount of computer power. It’s really meant as a web distribution or iPod format, for playback only. Putting that on top of a pro app like Final Cut Pro is probably going to tax your system to begin with, and on top of that you’re changing direction and speed of the clip playing…to sum it up, I’m not really surprised you’re having trouble. If you don’t have the space to do this at DV resolution (about 650 GB) then I suggest converting it all to something like the offline photo-JPEG formats.

H.264 is a delivery format, not an editing format.

You might be better off if you recapture, as I’m not sure converting it will necessarily retain timecode information. Not having timecode information, as you know, will make recapturing at full resolution impossible. You might want to test that first. It may not save you much more time, anyhow.
