  • animations from ae in fcp come out bad after exporting

Posted by Jeff Blasczyk on March 8, 2006 at 3:33 pm

I’ve created an animation to be used at the begining of a short film in After Effects, (exported as a .mov file). It plays cleanly on my desktop but when imported into FCP and then exported (from fcp)as an additional quicktime it looks like garbage.
I presently do not have a preview monitor but it seems to me the animation should retain it’s original look on the computer screen while viewing the MOV. Maybe I’m wrong. I don’t know what the solution is.

    Without actually seeing it…

    What was your comp size?

How did you render it out?

    Animation Best quality?

    DV?

What is actually going on? All exports from AE I do look great. I’ll bet it has something to do with your render settings.

The comp size is 720 x 480 d1/dv ntsc (0.9) 29.97 res- full in AE.
I render it out at best / full dv ntsc 48 kHz, format: quicktime movie, animation best.

In fcp i have the system set at dv ntsc 48 kHz, and i “export quicktime movie”.

I have no idea. I think I remember actually exporting a good quality file from fcp. It’s giving me a headache. I don’t actaually have to use it for a while so I have time to figure out why it’s doing this fortunetly.
It’s going to be put in a short that’s going to be shot in 24p. Will that effect the animation as well?

is the footage being edited at 29.97, 23.98, or 24? it will make a difference, and your comp should be created the same.
as well your ae comp wont look very good unless the project is being conformed in the end, uncompressed.

I’m not sure what the frame rate is going to be yet, just concerned for the future when i put everything together.
Which after effects setting should i use? I’m not fimiliar with comforming or uncompressed.

The animation i made is simply just a layered jpeg on a black background. Nothing that fancy.

Yeah it takes a bit of trial and error to get everything right. Where I work there’s a lot of different editing systems. For quantels I create my AE projects 59.97 d1 ntsc, but render at 29.97 lower field first. If I am sending an animation with alpha that will be composited on the quantels, it needs to be 29.97 all the way through, rendered in frames.
For FCP, I use the Apple FCP Compressor, 29.97 frames to playout live. For the Avid systems, I use the Avid Meridian compressor and frames.

Point is set up a few test renders, make em short, but complex enough to cover what you need them to do. Render with different outputs. Then just remember what looks best and doesn’t take forever to render. AE is cool in that you can create render templates with all your settings. Thats a lifesaver.

Its a bit of a process, but do it once and it’ll keep everything from looking like poo at the end of the day.
