Is it possible to use STP as an audio mixing tool on a documentary? I’d like to think so, but when I export my project STP wants to render all my media files, not just the clips I’ve used. Quite often I’ll have a 3 second clip coming from a 20 minute media file, and when I try to analyse the clip or similar in STP, it goes through the entire 20 minute media file. And when I want to non-destructively edit (when would you want to destructively edit I ask myself) STP copies all the media from which the clip has come. This can take quite a while.

I often have 20 or 30 hours of rushes and its just not practical to break these up into individual shots when i digitise, I just take in big chunks and break down later using sub clips. Works well – except for the STP problem.

    Any solutions welcome,

    Thanks,

    Ken.

STP is a version 1.0 software. As such, it is a very “young” program when it comes to various workflow issues. What you’re describing is exactly one of those circumstances that have yet to be worked out.

My advice to you is to either suck it up and learn to love the render, or go use pro toools. In it’s current form, STP is NOT quite ready to do what you’re asking it to do.

    Just my .02 cents.

Thanks Mark – I thought it couldn’t just be me having this problem.

What is the Protools workflow – is it possible to export audio from FCP with volume levels and handles?

    Thanks,

    Ken.

Yes, it is. However, most mixers will immediately toss out all level changes and start over from scratch. Handles are determined when creating the OMF.

You can export an OMF from FCP for a Pro Tools suite, although I have had lots of missing tracks show up when I do this and pans and envelopes did not come across as well as hoped. However, when using Automatic Duck on the ‘export to digital audio workstations’ preset, I have had very good success. This plug-in is not cheap but is well worth its cost due to the time it has saved me as well as preserving my relationship with the sound mixers who get these omfs.

    Thanks all,

Automatic Duck does seem the way to go for many things – not least FCP to AE as well.
