scratchy, black “picture”
king of the dumb questions and weird problems…
occaisionally my monitor shows me (barely!) a “scratchy” monochrome picture as the output from FCP. other channels on the monitor work fine, tapes play fine on the monitor from the deck, so it seems it is not the monitor itself, but maybe a nasty FCP (or Decklink) cable? i’ve trashed prefs, with no change. i’ve also tried another monitor, same “picture.”

Possibly it is loosing sync reference. Is there a common mode you are in when the monitor goes monochrome?
Does the Decklink card playout okay to the tape deck?

sorry for my extreme ignorance, but what do you mean by “common mode” and when you say “Does the Decklink card playout okay to the tape deck?” do you mean just recording to tape? because just playing off the timeline is what gives me the yucky pix…even though it looks “great” in the viewer and canvas windows. by the way, recording to tape gives me the same yucky pix.

By common mode means are you in Edit Tape, Log & Capture or Print to Tape when the monitor goes on the fritz. For example does the monitor fritz out when in Log & Capture only.
The common denominator here is the Decklink card and its breakout cable since it affects your monitor and VTR.
Is the change in the monitor instantaneously or does it seems to fade, first loosing color and then getting progressively dark? If that happens, I would suspect and reference signal issue between the Decklink card and your Monitor.
I would first investigate if I have the latest drivers for the Decklink card. I would also note if the video going weird is related to time of day-temperature or time after firing up your Mac which would indicate a heat related intermittent component failure issue with the Decklink.

i was just logging on to claim that i do believe it is a heat issue, when i saw your post. when i first turn on the computer today, all was fine. so heat is the only thing i can see that might cause this. thanks!
