  • Timecode reading on compressed project – want to display timecode at bottom right corner

Posted by Tim Ryan on February 21, 2006 at 12:02 am

Does anyone know if FCP allows me to display a timecode counter on an exported and compressed version of my project? I’m working with a composer who wants to see a timecode to help him design the musicial composition. It will allow us to work from different locations and discuss specific time points within the project.

So for example, a visual timecode reading will appear at the bottom right of the screen throughout the entire 13 minutes of the project after I’ve compressed it to MPEG2 or MPEG4. This way, at say 10 minutes, 15 seconds, and 2 frames (00:10:15;02) into the project, the timecode reading will be visable on the screen for us to compare notes: .

    Thanks for any advice.

Make a copy of your Sequence (to keep the Master “clean”) and, on the copy just add the Timecode Print Filter.

Effects tab > Video Filters > Video > Timecode Print

You can choose TCG or TCR function.

You can NEST your COPY of the Sequence and the filter will show the TC beginning from the head of the Sequence.

Depending on your Sequence and your system, you may need to RENDER the effect.

Then output this to whatever format you like.

I’m having a tough time with this filter although I have a feeling I’m missing something very simple.

How do I NEST the timecode? I selected the entire copied project, pulled it into a new sequence, highlighted everything, and selected the Timecode filter. I then tried to Superimpose the filter on a new video track. I now have the black slug screen with the timecode overriding the entire project. I can see the timecode but not my project.

I’ve tried using the FCP help but the manual isn’t very helpful.

    Thanks.

There’s two ways to do this. You could crop the timecode filter using the crop tools in the motion tab after loading it into the viewer, or actually nest the items and apply the filter to the nest.

You didn’t actually nest the items based on what you posted here. After selecting the items in the timeline, you have to go to Sequence>Nest Items in order to really nest them.

But, try cropping what you have. It’s another way, and it should work.
