  • Help with import of files and export for iPod

Not sure if this is the right forum, but here’s my dilema.

System info: G5 dual 2.7 with 4 gig ram, X-serve with 1 terabyte. Running FCP 5 version 5.0.3 (not updating til current projects are finished).

There are several hundred two or three minute clips that come in Quicktime and MPEG 1 formats. I am taking these clips, resizing, and outputting for download via the video iPod. When I deal with the Quicktime files, all is well. Video and audio come in fine and the export is great. Plays fine in the iPod and everyone is happy. However, when I’m working with the MPEG 1, I have problems. They are the same clips as the Quicktime, but open captioned. Why they decided to use MPEG 1 for open caption and Quicktime for non caption is beyond me. Anyhow, when I import the MPEG 1 into Final Cut Pro, the audio does not import. I have tried Quicktime player to export from MPEG 1 to Quicktime, but the same problem. No audio. The audio on the original MPEG 1 that I drag onto the computer plays fine, but when I import it in or change the format to Quicktime or MPEG 4 the audio vanishes. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

Your MPEG-1 files are most likely muxed (audio and video are together on the same track). You should be able to de-mux them with a program like MPEG Streamclip and then pull that into FCP.

    Here’s the link:

And it is a free program I believe.

    Thanks. That makes sense!
