PLEASE! What is the best way to convert MPEG2 to a usable FCP edting format??
I’m not new to editing but very new to Final Cut Pro. Unfortunately I shot some important footage on a Sony DVD405 Handycam. I was out of town in a jam with no camera and one hour to be ready to shoot. Twelve minutes in Best Buy and 13 hundred bucks later and I had set myself up for a list of very aggravating unnecessary problems. (My gut was screaming “stick with MiniDV”. Why didn’t I listen?) Anyway I just installed a new Final Cut Studio into a Power Mac G5. As a matter of fact I was very excited and eager to dig in. I’ve wanted to get up on FCP for a long time. I was however unaware of the final icing on the cake, the last straw, the one that sent me over the edge until 2 days ago when I first tried to import the files (which I now know to be incompatible MPEG2 files) into FCP. I have spent 2 days pulling my hair out trying to import the footage.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE will somebody just tell me exactly, step by step what I have to do to end this nightmare? I am relatively computer literate but not a computer head by any stretch and definitely not on the Mac. I do however follow instructions very well if they are spelled out. I have a Dell and an eMachine here as well. The Mac is not hooked to the net. (That can be corrected if necessary but I prefer to keep it isolated) I’ve been up all night. I’m going to take a quick nap and I pray for a savior when I awake. -

Google MPEGStreamclip. It’s free!
Otherwise, there’s DVDxDV or Cinematize, which are not free, that will demux your files. I can see a difference from free to paid for, but it’s not a mind-blowing difference. If you don’t need the best quality you can possibly get, you can probably get away with using MPEGStreamclip. Otherwise, you’ll get better quality from DVDxDV or Cinematize.
