    Hey all,

I’ve been trying to use compressor to make a quick DVD – it’s on a machine at an educational institution, and normally for something this simple I’d just export MP2 from FCP directly, but this machine doesn’t have that option in FCP – I have no idea why. Anyway, when I export form comporessor, everything looks great except I get these huge chunky block artefacts scattered around the frame at random times (or should I say, they happen randomly thorughout encoding, but occur on the same frames during playback). They’re about 15×15 or 20×20 pixels each, only last for 1 frame, and there are usually between 2 and 5 of them scattered across the frame when they occur. I’m encoding at a high bitrate (the project is only 4 minutes long, but it is for the school so I made custom menus in DVDSP, and thus the necessity for MP2 rather than simply going through iDVD).. I think the target was 5.5 and the max 7.8, but I can’t remember. Any ideas as to why this would happen? Is there something I missed in compressor.

Someone suggested that i might be encoding at too high a bitrate? Is that a possibility?

Thanks for the great help as always,

    Ben

Did you export a QuickTime movie or a QuickTime reference movie?

Is there any chance your FCP media is not the culprit? Is there a flash frame in the original material that is not so noticeable when played back in FCP but gets multiplied in its effect as an MPEG file?

Compressor is either encoding some glitched material or is writing a file that becomes slightly corrupt.

Have you tried writing to another volume or harddrive?

    Inquiring minds…

    Bryce,

I assume that compressor must be using a reference movie because I am jumping straight to compressor from FCP (never exporting from FCP). There are no flash frames and all the footage has been generated from images sequences in Maya that have been conformed to DV NTSC .mov footage in After Effects. There are also a few .jpg stills acting as title cards (which are not causing any problems).

    Thanks,
    Ben

If you’re using Compressor 2, don’t use any of the Compressor 1 presets found in “Custom.”
How are you checking playback (what device)?

Try dropping the Max bit rate to 7 or even 6.5.

Since it’s so short, try doing a CBR encode at around 6.

I see these drops a lot from VBR on computer playback. Is it doing the same on NTSC? If not, lower the compression rate and they should dissappear. not a great option, but it works.

Change the preset from Dual Pass VBR to 1 Pass. I have much better luck. Since your program is short, it won’t effect anything in negative wuality sense.

You could use the “fastest encode” presets and it will essentially get you the same results.
