FCP5 vs FCEHD
Posted by Matt Jones on February 1, 2006 at 8:36 pmWhat’s the quality difference (CODEC) between FCP5 and FCEHD? Is FCEHD a HDV native App? Can it Be? Is there any difference in rendering times during capture, editing and output?

FCEHD is limited to DV codecs only, like HDV. It is the exact same codec as in FCP 5.
FCP 5 can use all codecs such as DVCPro HD (far superior to HDV) and of course uncompressed formats.

February 1, 2006 at 9:28 pmFCE HD captures DV as DV/NTSC…same codec as FCP. It captures HDV as AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec), while FCP captures HDV in its native format.

February 1, 2006 at 9:36 pmSo if FCE captures HDV with the AIC, I would edit in AIC, and then output back to my Z1 in what CODEC? Is there another AIC to HDV transcode that has to happen first? Roughly how long does that take? What’s the quality difference between the AIC and the HDV native codec? Can you SEE it on a 1080i display?
Thanks. -

The BEST way to edit HDV is via 10bit Uncompressed HD. That’s the only successful way I’ve heard to get the best quality footage.
My guess is that you will definitely see a degredation of the HDV format by capturing to the AIC codec. I honestly didn’t know that FCEHD did not support HDV codec natively.
