  • Help in understanding dual monitor setup +1 (HDTV)

I am somewhat embarrased because this has me stumped. I may be creating a problem for myself that doesn’t even exist.

    But here it goes…
I just purchased a new Quad G5 primarily for the love of FCP. Well the graphics card (GForce 6800?) that comes with it have only two ports on it (both DVIs).
The Radeon X800 card I have for my PC (was using Vegas), has two Monitor ports plus a special s-video port for HDTV out.
When I purchased this X800, I specially looked for and asked for a card that would allow me to run two Monitors (vga & DVI or and combo of the two) as well as be able to display to a widescreen HDTV. I was told this Radeon card would do that so I purchased it.
Now I have this new MAC with only dual ports on it’s NVidia graphics card.
BUT, I only have two monitors hooked to it but one is a Gateway widescreen monitor/HDTV.
But here is what I want to do:
I want to have a dual monitor setup for editing and when I output or want to view the edited HD video. I want it to display on the Gateway’s HDTV channel.

Am I just so ignorant and do not need to worry about displaying the HDTV output via an HDTV channel or via the HDTV input on this monitor? In otherwords will the monitor display the HDTV via the DVI connection that is connected to it via the 2nd display outpur from the G5’s graphic card?

Sorry, I am not computer illiterate but this is new to me. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

um, when printing to tape, why dont you just plug in your hdtv setup into the deck so you can see it from that end?

    Billy,

Sorry to disappoint you, but your old display card could not have displayed HD through the s-video port despite what you were told. HD video signals can only be displayed via component, DVI, or HDMI outputs.

To achieve your goal, you will need an HD capable video display card or a an HD capable I/O card, or you could possibly route through an HD deck as Ben recommended.
