    Hi Folks,

Looking for a bit of help here to sort out a best quality workflow for a short film. Here’s where we’re at:

All footage shot on a Sony Z-1 at HDV. (1080i at 25fps)
All footage then digitised at DV using the HVR-M10E deck to do the downconvert.
All editing done on a DV timeline and it looks just fab.

It’s this next part of my workflow that I need some advice on.

Final delivery is PAL Digibeta (probably from a 10 Bit timeline.) I’ll be balancing out the colour but the tape is heading off to somebody else for proper grading. To create this timeline I was just going to re-digitise at HDV then drop everything onto a 10 Bit timeline and hit render. But I’ve been hearing all sorts of talk about HDV artifacting relating to the way the codec is handled by FCP.

So should I use the intermediate codec instead of the HDV codec, or should I try and digitise at DVCPro, or is there something else I can do, or is my plan the right one?

    Any clarity gratefully appreciated!

    Thanks,

    -Simmie

If you have already downconverted to DV and are working in a DV timeline, the HDV codec is no longer part of the process. Any artifacting should be apparent at this point. You should have no problems with the workflow you planned. If it’s a long sequence, try duplicating it and cutting it to about :20-:30 as a test.

    Hi there,

I realise that my sequence as it stands doesn’t use any HDV footage, but I thought that if I redigitised at HDV and then used the HDV sequence to create my 10bit timeline I would get better quality. Is this not the case?

    Thanks,
