Really need some help!
I’ve been posting a project with the help of another editor in fcp 4.5. We’ve moved over from a G4 laptop running 4.5 to a G5 dual 1.8 running fcp 5.04. The project file is 206mb (I don’t understand how its this big. I’ve got way bigger projects that only register as 3.8mb) and it refuses to open as a timeline in the newer version of fcp. It takes 5 mins for the project to load. I get the browser window with all the project files. The slug window and the audio meters but no timeline.
When I click on any of the project files in the browser I get an Error: Out of Memory message. I’ve tried opening and saving as in as many combinations as I can come up with. I haven’t resaved the orginal file in fcp 5.04 so I still have the option of going back to the G4 laptop. Problem is its not my machine and I’m trying to finish the work at home. This G5 is mine and it has 1Gig of memory so I know I should be covered.
I’m working off an external Lacie harddrive 250GB. I’ve tried transferring the files to my desktop and everything. It can’t be the hard drive can it? -

1 gig of memory might be enough, but your project file is huge, and I wouldn’t consider running FCP without 1.5 gigs. A gig of memory isn’t much these days. But it should open. Possibly your system drive is full, which is used to cache memory when neccessary.
I’m guessing however, that the file is corrupt in some way or it just doesn’t like it. Try duplicating the project and making it smaller and smaller and see if it opens. That’ll let you know if it’s a memory issue.

Just FYI, your project file shoul dbe on your internal drive, and your media on the external. You can back it up on the external, but keep the main project on your internal.
