Final Cut Studio now MANDATORY
Posted by Jeff Carpenter on January 17, 2006 at 8:32 pmIt looks like Final Cut Studio will soon be the only way to buy FCP. The individual apps will no longer be for sale by themselves.

It should be noted that the upgrade price to the whole suite for those who own the current version of a single app are very, very nice ($99 or $199 depending on which app.)
As a studio owner I’m not sure how to judge this. It doesn’t affect me at all. It’s not a huge deal to FCP-only owners either, I think. I guess the real losers are people who used DVD Studio Pro but NOT FCP. Are there people like that out there? I really don’t know.

January 17, 2006 at 9:26 pmHave you checked the Apple website lately? It looks like the Studio package already is the only way to buy any of the studio apps. Like you, I’m already a studio owner, & I think it’s a great value.

January 17, 2006 at 10:04 pm[Dave LaRonde] “The thing that really honks me off about it is that I’m probably going to wind up losing one of my favorite pieces of software, After Effects.
It has nothing to do with software incompatibility, but it has everything to do with cost. Since Motion and AE do a lot of the same things, my company will pressure the boss to drop AE if we continue down the FCP path.”
Upgrade for AE Pro is only $199, I just purchased it online. That’s not a very steep price to pay and with Motion not having the 3D Camera or lighting capabilities, I won’t leave AE anytime soon.
I use the two together as they actually work very well in tandem. Particles and resplication type of things I’ll do in Motion and then bring those over to AE. Especially particles, I do a LOT of fire, smoke, water types of things for animations and I’ll create those elements in Motion.
As for Studio being Manadatory, doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense to bury DVD Studio Pro into that package for folks who only author DVD’s. I could see Motion / FCP / Soundtrack Pro bundled, but not DVDSP.

January 17, 2006 at 10:32 pmMy husband is the DVD-meister in our little corner of the world. He certainly isn’t interested in buying the whole Studio to keep up with DVDSP! I can’t always share my edit station with him. I really hope Apple reconsiders this! Or at least let him install DVDSP from one of my Studios on his Mac! I don’t mean a multiple install, although that would be nice. I was going to give him my DVDSP install for my laptop since I use iDVD if I’m on the road and making a one-off DVD, but Apple says you can’t spread the install across multiple machines, so he bought his own copy before the holidays. It’s going to put a huge crimp in our scheduling if DVDSP isn’t kept as it’s own separate entity.

January 17, 2006 at 11:18 pmAs someone who’s self employed, I certainly understand you’re bosses point of view- lord knows I’m pretty conscious about what things cost me. Part of that equation should be what does it cost to not have it. If having certain tools makes you more productive because they overlap, then it might be worth owning both.
For the most of work I do, Motion has replaced AE. But I’m thinking of upgrading from my standard edition of 6.5 to the new AE pro if I can afford (justify?) the $500 because of what Motion doesn’t do, or what AE does better. Of course, your (employer’s) milage may vary, and whoever holds the purse strings is ultimately the one calling the shots. (I’m just lucky that most of the time it’s me!)
If it’s important enough, I’d like to think that you can convince your bosses that it’s worth the extra cost.

January 18, 2006 at 12:09 amIf you drop After Effects, be sure you know someone locally who can handle your AE work for you. As soon as you erase After Effects, you’re going to wish you had not done so. But there’s no compelling reason to upgrade to AE7 yet. Do you need those 32bpc renders for the IMAX in your conference room? Me neither. AE6 or 6.5 should give you all the muscle you need for at least two more years. By then, we’ll all be obsolete.

January 18, 2006 at 12:27 pmAm I the only one who thinks that all the apps in studio will be available by themselves when the new upgrades will be out, probably at NAB. I look at the rumors sites from time to time and sometimes they are right on the money and other times they are way out and AppleInsider is a rumor site. Lets just wait and see.
