I shot some test footage shots in a progressive mode using a Sony DCR-TRV900. It’s a little outdated, but bear with me:

So I’ve heard that this camera’s progressive mode is truly only 15 fps, but anyways…
In my test shots I tried a 60, 30, and 15 shutter speed. When i captured into fcp, i examined the footage, and the 60 is great quality, but the 30 and 15 look like they were shot on an 8mm or something. Does anybody know why the 60 shutter speed would be so much clearer than 30 and 15?

60 shutter IS the correct video shutter speed.
Anything UNDER that creates TOO LONG and exposure for proper motion.

this is a still shot though, with not a lot of motion. the quality of everything just looks bad though. It looks kind of like an interlaced frame: bad and choppy edges.

    My answer doesn’t change.

It’s probably throwing fields away. If you want progressive, do it in post by shooting normal 1/60th in camera and de-interlacing afterwards in FCP.

won’t that just give me half the resolution though?

Not if it’s a really good de-interlacer. Here’s some grabs of my 24p simulation from 60i.
