Hello everone, the most recent video by Modest Mouse, “Float On” is awesome and claims to be 100% totally done in A.E.. With all of the pros here, I was hoping for someone to shed light on this and possible be able to identify if any other programs were used or if it is indeed possible all A.E.. If anyone has any thing to note and can help at all , it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Bobby

I would say that it would be quite a bit of work, but I would think that it could definatly be done in AE. The layers seem to be all 2d (I watched it on youtube and comression was terrible) but place in 3d space. The band members have been rotoed and then their layers have been set to auto orient to the camera. The rest of the elements are 2d layers placed in 3d with a camera. I am not sure if ALL elements will have been created in AE, but the compositing seems to be highly doable in AE.

Pretty cool video…not a fan of the tune, but pretty cool video.

Yes, it’s completely possible. Doing all those cutouts appears to be the larger part of the work (as is finding suitable photos in the first place). I don’t think that they used 3D-layers that much as it only complicates all the panning and moving around.

I’m working on 5 minute episodes that are all composited in that similar fashion. It takes a while to animate all of it, and even longer to render, but yes it is achieveable. In my mind the most notable part of the video is the camera work — the AFX camera is just a pain in the ass. They did a great job with that.

That song came out 2 years ago. Is that really their latest video? They must not be a fan doing videos then.
