  • Preparing PS Images for the Big Screen

Hello and Happy Merry to All,

At long last, I’m working on a feature film… or rather, feature video… that will be edited in FCP and delivered first in DVD format and then upconverted (we pray) to HD or film.

This movie will utilize a great many still images (hundreds). I want to do my best to avoid problems in the future by handling the images correctly right from the start. Here are my questions:

Given the ultimate big-screen use of the video, at what resolution should the images be scanned?

I intend to do a lot of Ken Burnsing (Sorry Kevin, I meant “motion graphics”) in AE. Should the resolution be increased beyond the other pics on those images? How much?

Should the images be sized at 720 X 480, the same as video? Will that work ultimately, given the different aspect ratios involved?

Is there anything I should have asked about this but didn’t?

Is there a source or site that discusses the ins and outs of using PS images in film at length? Richard Harrington, I know, discusses the use of PS in video (bless him, I have the book and the t-shirt), but I think this is a bit different.

    Thanks very much,
    Sophie

    Hi Sophie,

Why not do this in anamorphic, provided your camera can do a true anamorphic image? Your graphics for that would be 864×480, and if you make them around double size you’d be able to pan and zoom quite a bit.

Your real problem later will be a good uprez, I hear the Kona 2 does a decent job.

    Good luck!

    Have a wonderful day.

    Dave and Chris,

Thank you so much for lighting my way. I’ve got to redo a lot of scanning now, but at least I know where I’m going and why.

Madre! I’m glad I asked at this point… and grateful for the guidance.

    Sophie
