Signal from DSR 11 to FC 4.5
I’m palying a DVCPro tape in a DSR-11 feeding via firewire to a final cut v 4.5 running on a G4, but I’m not getting any video or audio signal. The deck control features work but no signal. I’ve tried 2 different firewire cables. I have perfect signal when using the RCA outs to a monitor, but nothing in Final Cut and I haven’t had trouble in the past when using other Firewire Video devices like a video camera. Do I need a driver for the deck, are there settings, any suggestions?

Go to the “Easy Setup” in the Final Cut Pro menu.
Make sure you’re capture settings are DV NTSC.

Check. Final Cut is set to DV-NTSC. I also trashed the Final cut user preferences. Still no signal.

Make sure the Deck is in “DV” (iLink, FireWire) mode.
This is either a menu choice or a panel switch.If it IS in DV, connect any other DV FW device (camcorder or deck) and see if that works.

The deck is in DV. Unfortunately I don’ t have another firewire device here right now to check. any other suggestions I’ll take ’em. I can get my hands on a DV FW device tomorrow.

What format of DVCPRO? I don’t think the DSR-11 plays back DVCPRO footage…at all. MAYBE DVCPRO 25, but no way does it handle DVCPRO 50. I have the deck, but never had to play those format of tapes.

I’ve heard people have been able to play DVCPro25 tapes from a DSR11 although output through analog only. You might try taking the S-Video and RCA audio and put it through another device (camera for example) and then take the firewire out of that into FCP.

It’s actually a standard DVCPro tape. It plays out fine through the Analog jacks to a monitor and I just tried it through a Formac Firewire converter and FC is now seeing it. Does that point to a problem with the DV out?

DV/DVCAM is not quite the same as DVCPro25. They’re all 25Mbps BUT there are some differences to the tape format. There’s DVCPro25 (sometimes called standard), DVCPro50 DVCPro100 (also called DVCProHD). While the DSR11 may play DVCPro25 it’s not “officially” supported by the Sony DSR11 (whereas the DSR-1500 does).

Interesting. Good to know. I’ll try some other formats to see if the firewire works with those.
