Blocky graphics from AE
Posted by Jim Bunkelman on December 20, 2005 at 7:49 pmI know I’m missing something simple, but when I import graphics created in AE they show up very blocky, almost like they are not anti-aliased. They look great in quicktime, but horrible in FCP when they are placed in the timeline.

December 20, 2005 at 9:31 pmThey are possibly rendered with a straight alpha matte instead of premultiplied. The straight is better than premultiplied for almost every situation, but FCP may be interpreting it as premultiplied or as no alpha at all. QT is probably interpreting it correctly. In FCP, make sure that it’s being interpreted as straight. And even then, it may only look correct once composited in the timeline.

December 20, 2005 at 10:17 pmThat doesn’t seem to be the problem. They were rendered premultiplied. I just tried every combination including rendering a file straight, and the edges are still blocky. When I open the file in the viewer, it looks fine. It is only when I import it into my timeline that it looks bad in the canvas window. If I double click on it in the timeline and open the graphic in the Viewer window that way, it also looks blocky. It almost looks like the resolution goes way down, but my sequence settings are the same as the QT movie.

In my experience, a QT with a straight alpha looks like shit in QT but great in FCP, because it defaults to straight alpha. I always make them straight out of AE. Never had any problems with them.
Have a wonderful day.

The canvas always looks like crap, you need to be using a proper broadcast monitor. And straight alphas are what FCP wants.
Have a wonderful day.
