HELP, HELP, HELP Timeline keeps dropping away and come back
August 05 bought NEW G5 dual 2 gig, 2.5g ram, Final Cut Studio.
I have a huge problem where I can’t consistently play my timeline without it stopping/freezing and coming back. It’s like someone is unplugging my firewire cable (I have a DSR 20) and plugging it back in.

– I’m using the internal HD for projects and have over 30 gigs still avail on the HDI’m currently working on a 90 second project but this problem happens on a variety of projects.
At random points in the timeline, the image and audio feeding the monitor goes away (through the DSR 20). Screen has grey squares flicker and image goes black and silent for about 2 seconds. Image then retuns and seconds later the audio returns unsynced. 2 more seconds later the audio is back in sync. If I turn off the DSR and just use the computer to monitor the timeline, the problem still happens but simply freezes and then return after a few seconds.
If I’m lucky, I can get the 90 minute timeline to play without glitches but that happens maybe 1 out of 20 times. The problem seems to be getting worse. I did a Quicktime export of the project (not a self contained movie) and imported it into a new timeline and it is a little better but the problem still exists.
This is extremely frustrating and worse when a client is over my shoulder.
ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS WHAT’S GOING ON????????
I have not trashed my prefs yet with this project but have done so on other projects (with this machine) and it hasn’t really helped.
Has anyone heard of this problem? Everything is broadcast legal and there are only a few effects. 2 video tracks and 4 audio tracks.

How big is your hard drive? 30gbs available is not very much. That is more than likely the problem.

I have a 160 Gig but with 30 gig avail. that’s still more than 10%. Does everyone agree this might be my problem?

Don’t even waste your time or your brain cells on this one, thats clearly the problem. 300gb drives are only $125 now, go get one.

What?
Do you have system and application _AND_ media on the same drive?
Why?
That just doesn’t work.

Media/system/program should all work on the same drive or Mac would have to sell dual HD with every copy of FCP. I think it’s nuts that it shouldn’t all just work fine on one computer with one HD.
I’ll try separating the media files to my external FW HD.

Sorry, but you’re absolutely wrong. This is not a secret, nor is it obscure information, and it’s in the FCP manual, as well.
No professional video editing systems are designed to work without dedicated media drives. Not Avid, not Media 100, not Vegas, not FCP.

mac doesn’t sell thier macs with two drives, but it usre gives you the option to buy an extra drive. Not everyone needs an extra drive, but you most certianly do. You can get away with having a second internal drive, but what you really want is at the very least a FW800 array or preferrably higher (like SCSI or fibre channel).

If you read the manual you’ll see that the internal system drive is not reccommnded.
From Volume 1, Chapter 14 pg. 179 of the FCP 5 users mamual from the final cut pro help menu:
“By default, Final Cut Pro uses the hard disk on which the application is installed as your
scratch disk to store captured and render files. Ideally, you should use a hard disk other
than your main system disk as your scratch disk. Depending on how much space you
need for your media, you can have up to twelve scratch disks in your Final Cut Pro
editing system. ”and from pg 183:
“Since digital media (especially high data rate video) makes your disks work harder, you
should use dedicated disks for capturing and playing back your digital video and other
media files. Consider your media disks as storage units that work long, hard hours,
while your startup disk keeps your system properly organized.”Jeremy
